Donnie Yen's 2025 Action Movie Continues 6-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak

The Rotten Tomatoes score has arrived for The Prosecutor, and Donnie Yen's six-year streak remains intact. Featuring Yen in the director's chair on top of being the star, The Prosecutor follows a former prosecutor as he helps a young man who has been wrongly accused of drug trafficking, uncovering corruption at every turn. The movie marks Yen's follow-up to Sakra (2023) and to John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), the latter of which saw him playing blind assassin Caine opposite Keanu Reeves.

Accompanying the movie's release on January 10, The Prosecutor has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes to an impressive score of 93% with 15 reviews, as of writing. Though this score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, it marks another in a long line of Yen movies that have earned the "Fresh" designation, including Sakra, John Wick: Chapter 4, Raging Fire (2021), Mulan (2020), Enter the Fat Dragon (2020), and Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019). So far, reviews have praised The Prosecutor's standout action sequences and Yen's assured directing.

There are additional Yen titles over the last six years not mentioned above, but they have too few reviews on Rotten Tomatoes to have any score.

What The Prosecutor's Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For Donnie Yen

Yen Has Been Cemented As An Action Icon

Though Yen may not quite be at Jackie Chan status, he is undoubtedly one of the biggest and best names in the world of action cinema. His work in American movies is somewhat limited, with John Wick: Chapter 4 and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) being his most notable titles, but he regularly stars in action flicks out of Hong Kong. The Ip Man movies, especially, are major hits, and he's a major reason for their success.

Even if The Prosecutor doesn't end up being widely seen by American audiences, its critical success bodes well for Yen's future as a movie star. One notable title that's in development for Yen is a John Wick Caine spinoff movie, and it was just recently revealed that Yen himself is in talks to direct. Story information remains under wraps, but Yen's return as Caine is looking more likely to be a success.

Yen has a proven ability to deliver strong physical performances as an actor, but The Prosecutor's Rotten Tomatoes success speaks to his abilities as a storyteller and a director as well. Eventually, Yen, who is 61 years old, will have to take a step back from being an action hero, and the reception to his latest film suggests he will continue to enjoy plenty of success behind the camera.

Yen's continued fight prowess means the announced Ip Man 5 should deliver the kind of action sequences audiences have come to expect from the franchise.

For now, though, Yen shows no signs of slowing down as an action star, and The Prosecutor features some standout fight sequences. Yen's continued fight prowess means the announced Ip Man 5 should deliver the kind of action sequences audiences have come to expect from the franchise. It remains to be seen how audiences will respond to The Prosecutor, but the film is evidently off to a strong start.
